Introducing Ascend: More Than a Martial Arts School
Welcome to Ascend Martial Arts!
Whether you’re a current student, a parent exploring programs for your child, or someone simply wanting to learn more about who we are, we’re grateful you’re here. This blog is one more way we hope to connect with our community, share valuable resources, and encourage families as they help their children grow.
But before we begin discussing martial arts, parenting, fitness, nutrition, and child development, it seems fitting to answer one important question:
Why does Ascend exist?
A Dream Years in the Making
Although Ascend Martial Arts is a new school, the vision behind it has been developing for much of my life.
My name is John Stalions, and I am the owner and chief instructor of Ascend Martial Arts. I grew up in Northern California, raised by a hardworking single mother who sacrificed tremendously to provide for our family. Looking back, one of the greatest blessings of my childhood wasn’t simply where I lived—it was the people who surrounded us.
Our church became our extended family. Faithful men invested in my life as mentors. Families opened their homes to us. Adopted grandparents cared for us when my mother was working long hours. They encouraged us, challenged us, and helped shape the person I would become.
Those experiences taught me a lesson I have never forgotten: children flourish when caring adults intentionally invest in their lives.
That lesson has guided me ever since.
A Passion for Helping Families
After graduating from high school, I attended Bible college to prepare for ministry. My wife and I entered Christian education shortly after we were married, and for more than twenty years we have dedicated our lives to serving children and families.
We’ve taught students from preschool through high school, led educational programs, worked alongside parents, and served in churches across several states. Today, I continue serving as a pastor here in Northwest Indiana while pursuing another passion that has become deeply meaningful to our family—martial arts.
Throughout those years, one conviction has remained constant: helping children succeed requires more than teaching information. It requires building character, confidence, discipline, and strong relationships.
Where Martial Arts Entered the Story
Like many kids growing up in the 1980s and 90s, I dreamed of becoming a martial artist. I watched The Karate Kid, pretended to be a ninja with my brother, and eagerly signed up for my first taekwondo trial as a young teenager.
Unfortunately, our family couldn’t afford to continue after the introductory classes, and that dream quietly faded.
Years later, after moving to Indiana and raising three children of our own, my wife and I wanted to provide opportunities that would genuinely help our kids grow. When our son was eight years old, we enrolled him in a local taekwondo program.
Watching him discover confidence and excitement reignited something inside me. Soon I joined as a student myself, fulfilling a childhood dream while creating an experience my son and I could share together.
As I trained, I realized something unexpected.
Teaching martial arts felt remarkably similar to everything I had spent my life doing.
The values I had been teaching through ministry and education—respect, integrity, perseverance, self-control, responsibility, and leadership—were the very same principles being practiced on the training floor every day.
Martial arts wasn’t just about punches and kicks.
It was another way to help people become better versions of themselves.
Why We Created Ascend
Over time, I began dreaming about what a martial arts school could become if its primary focus wasn’t simply producing great martial artists, but developing great people.
What if students left class stronger physically…
…more confident mentally…
…and better equipped socially?
What if parents had a partner who reinforced the same character values they were teaching at home?
What if every class intentionally developed discipline, respect, perseverance, leadership, and resilience alongside martial arts skills?
Those questions eventually became the foundation of Ascend Martial Arts.
Our mission is simple:
We exist to help people ascend physically, mentally, and socially.
Everything we teach is built around that purpose.
Martial arts is our vehicle, but developing people is our destination.
More Than a School
At Ascend, we want every student to discover that growth is possible.
We want children to believe in themselves.
We want teenagers to develop confidence and leadership.
We want adults to stay active while continually challenging themselves.
Most importantly, we want families to know they don’t have to navigate childhood alone. We believe the greatest results happen when instructors and parents work together toward the same goal.
That’s why you’ll see us talking about much more than martial arts in this blog. We’ll be sharing articles on child development, parenting, fitness, nutrition, leadership, confidence, healthy habits, and practical ways families can continue growing together outside the dojo.
Welcome to the Journey
Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the very first time or you’ve been training for years, we’re honored to be part of your journey.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about who we are and why we do what we do.
We hope you’ll continue following along as we share ideas, encouragement, and practical resources designed to help your family continue to ascend.
Welcome to Ascend Martial Arts.
We’re excited to grow with you.
