Living with Purpose

Your purpose will define your actions.

Living with Purpose

Last week I shared the Core Values of Ascend Martial Arts. Those values answered the first question every person and every organization must eventually answer:

Who are we?

The next question is equally important:

Why are we here?

Few people drift into a meaningful life. Purpose requires intention.

As children, many of us learned the difference between doing something on purpose and doing something on accident. I can still remember wrestling with my brother around the house until someone inevitably got hurt or something got broken. My first response was usually, “It was an accident.”

The injury may have been accidental, but the decision to wrestle wasn’t. We had chosen the behavior, and the outcome followed.

Life works much the same way.

Many of the outcomes we experience are the result of the direction we’ve chosen. Purpose gives direction to our decisions, and our decisions shape our destination. Without purpose, it’s easy to stay busy while never making meaningful progress.

I believe one of the greatest tragedies in life is not failure—it is living successfully for something that never really mattered.

Purpose answers the question, “Why do I do what I do?”

It influences every decision we make. It determines what we say yes to, what we say no to, and what kind of person we are becoming. A person with purpose doesn’t simply react to life—they live intentionally.

At Ascend Martial Arts, our purpose is simple and clear:

We exist to develop people through intentional training so they continually Ascend physically, mentally, and socially.

Everything we do flows from that statement.

Our curriculum is chosen with purpose. Our instructors teach with purpose. The way we train, the way we lead, the way we encourage students, and even the way we design our facility all serve one objective: developing people.

We believe good people are built, not born.

Every person possesses the capacity to grow. Through intentional training, disciplined practice, meaningful relationships, and consistent encouragement, people develop the confidence, character, resilience, and leadership necessary to keep climbing. That is why Ascend Martial Arts exists.

Our purpose is more than a statement on a website—it is the standard by which we evaluate every decision. If something helps us fulfill our purpose, we pursue it. If it distracts us from that purpose, we reconsider it.

Purpose keeps us moving in the right direction.

I’d like to leave you with a challenge.

Have you determined your own purpose?

Not simply what you do for a living, but why you exist. What are you building your life around? What kind of person are you becoming? What legacy are you leaving for those who follow after you?

Living with purpose doesn’t guarantee an easy life, but it does give every step meaning.

At Ascend Martial Arts, we are honored to partner with families and students as they discover their potential and continue climbing toward the person they were created to become.

Next week, I’ll share the Mission of Ascend Martial Arts. If our purpose explains why we exist, our mission explains how we intend to fulfill that purpose every day.
