The Core Values of Ascend Martial Arts
Every organization should be able to answer three fundamental questions:
Who are we?
Why do we exist?
What are we committed to accomplishing?
At Ascend Martial Arts, we believe these questions must be answered in that order.
Most people first notice the mats, the uniforms, the classes, or the facility. But long before Ascend Martial Arts had a physical location, it had convictions. Over the past year of preparing to open our doors, I have spent countless hours defining the philosophy that would shape every decision we make.
This has never been simply a business exercise. Ascend Martial Arts is the fulfillment of a lifelong calling. It was born on paper in philosophy long before it became a place where students train.
One conviction has quietly shaped everything we have established:
We believe people are built, not born.
Greatness is not reserved for a select few. Character, confidence, leadership, discipline, and excellence are not accidents of birth—they are the product of intentional training, consistent practice, and purposeful development. We believe every person has the ability to ascend when they are given the right instruction, the right environment, and the right encouragement.
That belief is woven into every program we offer and every decision we make.
Over the next several weeks, I’ll be sharing the Purpose Statement and Mission Statement of Ascend Martial Arts. But before we can discuss why we exist or what we aim to accomplish, we must first answer the most important question:
Who are we?
Before you can know what you’re called to do, you must first know who you are.
Our Core Values define the identity of Ascend Martial Arts. They are not aspirations describing who we hope to become someday. They are declarations of who we are today and who we are committed to remaining. Everything else—our purpose, our mission, our programs, and our culture—is built upon these five convictions.
The Five Core Values of Ascend Martial Arts
Development — We intentionally develop people
Excellence — We pursue our very best
Service — We make life better for others
Respect — We treat people right
Family — We grow stronger together
These five values are the pillars upon which Ascend Martial Arts stands. They are intentionally ordered because they tell the story of who we are.
Everything begins with development. We believe people can grow through intentional training and purposeful instruction. As people develop, they learn to pursue excellence by giving their very best in everything they do. Excellence, however, is never meant to elevate ourselves above others. Instead, it equips us for service, using our abilities to improve the lives of those around us. A heart of service naturally produces respect, as we learn to honor the value and dignity of every person we encounter. Ultimately, all of these values strengthen what matters most—family. Whether in our homes or within our school community, we believe people grow stronger together.
Every class we teach, every student we welcome, every instructor we train, every program we create, and every decision we make flows from these convictions. They are not simply words on a wall—they are the standard by which we strive to live.

Development
Everything begins here.
At the heart of Ascend Martial Arts is a passion for developing people.
Growth is never accidental. It is the result of intentional training, consistent practice, and faithful guidance. We believe people are shaped by the training they receive, and when that training is purposeful, lives are transformed.
We don’t simply teach martial arts—we develop people through martial arts.
Development touches every stage of life. Our preschool students build coordination, confidence, and foundational life skills. Children learn discipline, responsibility, perseverance, and character. Teenagers discover leadership and purpose. Adults are challenged to continue growing, learning, and pursuing personal excellence.
No one ever reaches a point where they no longer need to grow. There is always another mountain to climb.
⸻
Excellence
Excellence isn’t measured by perfection—it is measured by wholehearted effort.
Scripture reminds us, “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23)
That principle shapes everything we do at Ascend Martial Arts. Excellence means giving our very best, not because someone is watching, but because it reflects our character.
We pursue excellence in the way we care for our school, the quality of our instruction, the professionalism of our staff, and the intentional design of every program we offer. Excellence also extends beyond our walls. We challenge our students to pursue excellence in their schoolwork, in their careers, in their relationships, and in the daily choices that shape their lives.
Excellence is not about being better than someone else. It is about becoming the very best version of yourself.
⸻
Service
We believe the highest form of leadership is service.
Our goal is not to elevate ourselves above others but to lift others up. That means cultivating humility, personal sacrifice, and a genuine desire to improve the lives of those around us.
Teaching martial arts is what we do.
Serving people is who we are.
Whether we’re encouraging a struggling student, helping a child overcome fear, partnering with parents, mentoring future leaders, or serving our local community, we want every interaction to leave people better than we found them.
As students grow in skill and responsibility, they are given opportunities to lead others. In doing so, they learn that true leadership is measured not by how many people follow them, but by how faithfully they serve them.
⸻
Respect
Respect has always been one of the defining characteristics of traditional martial arts.
At Ascend, however, respect is more than a rule—it is part of our identity.
We honor every person because we believe every individual possesses inherent worth and dignity. We teach respect for self, respect for others, and respect for authority while also helping students develop the wisdom to recognize healthy leadership and honorable character.
Many people say that respect must be earned. While trust is built over time, we believe respect is something we choose to give. It reflects our own character more than the actions of another person.
When respect becomes part of who we are, it changes the way we speak, the way we listen, the way we lead, and the way we treat every person we encounter.
⸻
Family
Everything we do at Ascend Martial Arts begins with family and ultimately points back to family.
We believe the home is the primary place where children are developed, and parents are their greatest instructors. Our role is never to replace the family but to reinforce what is already being taught at home. We desire to come alongside parents as partners, helping strengthen the lessons of discipline, respect, responsibility, perseverance, and character.
As children grow, they naturally begin listening to additional voices outside the home. We consider it a tremendous responsibility to be one of those voices. Our desire is never to compete with parents for influence but to continually point students back toward the wisdom, love, and leadership of their family.
At the same time, we recognize that every family has its own story. No two homes are exactly alike. We want Ascend Martial Arts to be a place where every person is welcomed with dignity, treated with kindness, and surrounded by a community that genuinely cares.
When families grow stronger, communities grow stronger. That is the kind of environment we are committed to building every day.

The Foundation of Ascend
These values were not handed down by a corporate office or written simply to fill space on a website. They existed long before Ascend Martial Arts had a name, a logo, or a building.
In many ways, these values gave birth to Ascend.
They guide every decision we make, every class we teach, every student we welcome, every family we serve, and every instructor we develop. Programs may evolve, facilities may expand, and new opportunities will come, but these convictions will remain because they define who we are.
Our purpose explains why we exist.
Our mission explains what we are committed to accomplishing.
Our core values explain who we are.
Everything else is built on that foundation.
Thank you for taking the time to learn the heart behind Ascend Martial Arts. We are honored to be entrusted with the opportunity to invest in the lives of every student and every family who walks through our doors.
Next week, I’ll share our Purpose Statement—why Ascend Martial Arts exists and the difference we hope to make in the lives of those we serve.
